Oyo Government Warns Against Fake Security Rumours Amid School Kidnap Crisis

The Oyo State Government has warned residents against spreading unverified security information, saying false reports could create panic, disrupt ongoing security operations and weaken public confidence during a sensitive period.

The warning was issued in a statement by Abayomi Fagbenro, who urged residents to confirm security-related information before sharing it with others.

Fagbenro also warned against ignoring genuine threats or failing to report suspicious activities, stressing that such actions could delay the response of security agencies and worsen the situation.

According to him, residents must remain vigilant, pay close attention to their surroundings and report only verified information to the appropriate authorities. He added that maintaining security is a collective responsibility that requires cooperation between citizens and security agencies.

The warning followed the circulation of a false rumour on Tuesday claiming that Ladoke Akintola University of Technology had been attacked by bandits and shut down.

Although the report was later confirmed to be false, it heightened tension across Ogbomoso and surrounding communities already shaken by the recent terrorist attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

During the attack last Friday, armed men reportedly invaded three schools on the outskirts of Ogbomoso, killing two teachers and abducting several pupils, students and school staff members.

One teacher was reportedly shot during the invasion, while another abducted teacher was later allegedly beheaded by the kidnappers.

Security sources said seven students, 18 children and six teachers are still being held captive as rescue operations continue in the area.

Authorities say security operatives are intensifying efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims and restore calm to affected communities.
