Video Shows Armed-Style Extortion on Lagos-Epe Expressway as Woman Motorist Harassed by Road Touts

A disturbing video circulating online shows a group of men clinging to the bonnet and roof of a woman’s car along the Lagos–Epe Expressway, in an incident that lasted several minutes and nearly resulted in a crash involving a motorcycle.

According to the driver, the men surrounded her vehicle while it was in motion and aggressively demanded payment via an Opay transfer, insisting she comply simply because she was behind the wheel.

She described the experience as terrifying, saying she was left trapped in a dangerous situation and unsure whether to speed off or stop as the men continued to pursue her vehicle.

The footage has once again drawn attention to the activities of street touts popularly known as agberos, who are often linked to transport unions and accused of extortion, intimidation, and harassment of motorists across parts of Lagos State.

Female drivers, in particular, are increasingly reported to be targets of such roadside harassment, with many alleging that they are pressured into making illegal payments under fear and coercion.

The incident has triggered renewed public outrage, with many Nigerians calling on the Lagos State Government to take stronger action against the practice, either through structured reform and retraining of transport enforcers or outright removal of illegal tout operations from major highways.

Despite previous enforcement efforts, concerns persist that the problem has remained widespread, especially on busy routes like the Lagos–Epe corridor, where motorists say extortion has become routine.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the latest viral video.
