At least several security personnel have been killed following a deadly overnight attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Yobe State.
Force spokesperson, Anthony Okon Placid, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, May 16, 2026, noting that the attack occurred in the early hours of May 8 around 1:15 a.m. during advanced tactical and counter-terrorism training.
According to him, the attackers launched a coordinated assault from multiple directions, triggering a prolonged gun battle between the insurgents and security forces stationed at the facility.
“The officers paid the supreme price in service to the nation following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Buni Yadi,” he said.
While official figures were not immediately released, sources from the area claimed that about 17 police officers and over 20 soldiers were killed during the fierce confrontation, which reportedly lasted more than three hours.
The attackers were eventually repelled after failing to breach the facility or capture weapons, according to local accounts.
Residents described the incident as one of the most intense clashes in the region in recent years, highlighting the continued threat posed by Boko Haram and affiliated groups despite ongoing military operations in the North-East.
Security officials, including the Inspector-General of Police, praised the fallen officers for their bravery and reaffirmed commitments to track down those responsible for the attack.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security agencies continue counter-insurgency operations in the area.
