The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra State has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the state government over the abduction of one of its members, Dr Edwin Emegakor, warning that an indefinite strike may follow if he is not released within the deadline.
Dr Emegakor, who serves as the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital, was reportedly kidnapped on May 7 by unidentified armed men in uniform shortly after attending to patients.
In a communiqué issued after an emergency general meeting held on Saturday, the association said the abductors have not contacted the victim’s family, colleagues, or associates since the incident occurred.
The statement, signed by Dr Princeston Okam and Dr Obiaeli Ifeanyi, condemned the worsening security situation in the state and called on authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the doctor’s release without delay.
The association warned that failure to meet its demand within 48 hours would trigger a statewide withdrawal of medical services.
“If at the expiration of the above timeline our member is not released, all doctors in Anambra under the NMA will down tools until he is freed,” the communiqué stated.
While expressing appreciation for efforts by the state government through the Ministry of Health, the association insisted that urgent action was needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
