A quiet evening in Angwan Ishaku community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, turned tragic as gunmen attacked and killed a young couple, leaving behind heartbreak and unanswered questions.
The victims, 30-year-old Iliya Gyang and his 25-year-old pregnant wife, Grace, were reportedly shot during the нападение, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Two other residents sustained injuries, while the attackers fled immediately after carrying out the assault.
According to community sources, Iliya was working on his farm near his home when he was attacked. His wife was also shot and died instantly at the scene, while he later succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
The incident was confirmed by the Berom Youth Moulders Association, which described the killings as “barbaric, wicked, and inhumane.” The group revealed that the attackers arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire indiscriminately, and escaped through a route leading toward nearby settlements.
Beyond the loss, the tragedy has left a deeper wound — the couple’s one-year-old twin boys are now orphaned, a painful reminder of the growing insecurity affecting communities in the state.
The attack comes just days after Caleb Mutfwang visited the area to discuss security concerns with stakeholders, and shortly after a State Security Council meeting where new measures were announced to tackle ongoing violence.
The association warned that the latest incident shows that perpetrators remain undeterred despite government efforts, urging security agencies to intensify operations and carry out coordinated raids in identified flashpoints.
It also called on the state government to provide urgent support for the orphaned children, while extending condolences to the grieving families struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss.
