A member of the National Youth Service Corps, Segun Ajibare, has reportedly been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps over his outspoken criticism of a government project in Kwara State.
Sources revealed that Ajibare was picked up in Osogbo, Osun State, where he is currently serving, before being transported to Ilorin. His arrest is said to be linked to a series of social media posts and podcasts in which he questioned the collapse of the Moro Bridge, despite claims that it had been rehabilitated in 2024.
In one of his widely circulated podcasts, Ajibare raised concerns about the cost and quality of the project, drawing attention to alleged discrepancies in reported spending. His commentary reportedly called for transparency and accountability from the Kwara State government.
Shortly after his arrest, Ajibare was said to have sent an emergency message to close associates before his phone became unreachable. According to a source, he indicated that security operatives were already transporting him to Ilorin at the time.
The arrest has also been linked to allegations involving Abdulquawiy Olododo, a former Commissioner for Works, who was reportedly criticised in Ajibare’s commentaries. However, efforts to obtain his response to the claims were unsuccessful as of the time of reporting.
Sources further alleged that the operation was a joint effort between DSS and NSCDC personnel, with officials claiming that due process was followed, including notifying NYSC authorities before the arrest.
The development has raised fresh concerns about freedom of expression and the safety of young Nigerians who speak out on governance and public accountability. As of now, there has been no official statement from the agencies involved, leaving many questions unanswered about the circumstances surrounding Ajibare’s arrest and current condition.
