Anger and disbelief have gripped residents of Ewulu community in Delta State after allegations surfaced that a murder suspect was released shortly after being arrested.
The community, located in Aniocha South Local Government Area, has accused the State Criminal Investigation Department in Asaba of shielding Emeka Anukwu, popularly known as “Ikanda,” who is alleged to have shot and killed Nwabgoniwe Ezim during a heated community meeting.
According to accounts from residents, the incident occurred on September 30, 2024, during a gathering convened by the traditional ruler, S.G. Onyeweuwa, to address disputes over land sales and allegations of fraud.
Tensions had reportedly been building after Emeka, who chaired the land sales committee, was accused of selling more plots than were approved and failing to properly account for the proceeds. Youths in the community had demanded the refund of about ₦9 million linked to the disputed transactions.
The situation escalated during the meeting when Emeka allegedly retrieved an AK 47 rifle from his vehicle and opened fire, killing Ezim on the spot.
In a related incident, another individual identified as Chadiji Collins was said to have also fired a weapon, injuring one Chukwude Anukwu, who survived after receiving treatment.
Both cases were initially reported at the Nsukwa Police Station before being transferred to the State CID in Asaba for further investigation.
However, what has sparked outrage is what followed.
Residents claim that after Emeka was arrested on May 1, he was released the very next day under unclear circumstances. His reappearance in public has left many questioning the integrity of the investigation.
Community members allege that despite directives from higher police authorities, the suspect’s release may have been influenced by powerful interests.
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement addressing the allegations, further deepening suspicion and frustration within the community.
For the people of Ewulu, the issue goes beyond one case. It raises broader concerns about justice, accountability, and whether those accused of serious crimes can be held responsible.
As tension continues to rise, residents are calling for a transparent investigation and immediate action to restore trust and ensure that justice is not only done, but clearly seen to be done.
