Retired Police Chief DIG. Gumel, Promises Laws That Will Transform Youth, Strengthen Community Security in Jigawa/Nigeria, As He Appears Before APC Screening Committee.

Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammed Usaini Gumel on Saturday has appeared before the All Progressives Congress (APC) Screening Committee in Jigawa State, presenting himself as a candidate ready to translate decades of national service into legislative action for the people of Gumel/Maigatari/Gagarawa/Sule Tankarkar Federal Constituency.

The screening session was chaired by His Excellency Barr. Ali Sa’ad Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State’s first civilian governor, alongside other distinguished stakeholders and party elders from the state.

Addressing the committee, DIG Gumel drew on his 34 years of uninterrupted service to Nigeria to outline his vision for the constituency, framing his candidacy as a continuation of a lifelong commitment to public good.

“I come from a background of 34 years uninterrupted service to my country,” he said. “Throughout my career, I have contributed to community stability, security, and youth engagement, supporting peace-building efforts, mentoring young people, and facilitating access to opportunities within my capacity.”

From Security to Legislation
Gumel emphasized that his entry into politics is not about learning on the job but about applying his experience where it matters most in lawmaking and oversight.

“If entrusted with this mandate, I will deploy not just influence, but the constitutional power to make laws,” he stated. “I will champion legislation and oversight that institutionalize skills acquisition, youth empowerment, and rehabilitation programmes so that our young people move from vulnerability to productivity.”

He also pledged to support policies that strengthen collaboration between communities and security agencies, while boosting agriculture and small businesses two critical pillars of the constituency’s economy.

DIG. Gumel described his approach as “practical representation, inclusive development, and accountable leadership.” He said his focus would be on delivering tangible results in youth development, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and special support for persons with disabilities and women.

“I am not coming to start learning, I am coming to build on a lifetime of service for the benefit of our people,” he added.

DIG Gumel is widely credited for introducing the Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) model during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Kano State, a strategy that restored calm and reduced youth violence through community engagement.

His record of integrity has earned him multiple national and international honors, including the EFCC Award of Integrity & Zero Tolerance for Corruption and the Community Policing Advocate of the Year (2023).

With additional experience in ECOWAS Peace Support Operations and specialized training from the U.S. Department of State and UK Metropolitan Police, Gumel brings a global perspective to local governance a combination his supporters believe will help attract federal projects and foreign investment to Jigawa State.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, DIG Gumel’s appearance before the APC committee signals a growing momentum behind his candidacy, with many constituents viewing him as a leader who can bridge the gap between security, governance, and sustainable development.
