Two Akwa Ibom Senators Defect from PDP to APC, Citing Party Crisis

Two senators from Akwa Ibom State have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The senators are:

  • Sampson Ekong, representing Akwa Ibom South

  • Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East

Their letters of defection were read on the floor of the Senate during Wednesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The lawmakers cited leadership crises within the PDP as their reason for leaving the party.

“Due to the lingering leadership crisis and irreconcilable divisions within the PDP, we can no longer continue to remain in the party,” the letters stated.

This move is part of a broader wave of defections shaking the PDP, with several top politicians recently crossing over to either the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Observers say the defections could significantly reshape the political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially in Akwa Ibom State, traditionally a PDP stronghold.
