Chef Tartenger Victor has been arrested and detained at the Benue State Police Headquarters in Makurdi over an alleged defamatory social media post concerning the head of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
According to multiple sources, the post that led to Victor’s arrest was not originally authored by him but was shared content attributed to another writer, whom he duly credited in the post. Despite this, Victor was reportedly singled out and taken into custody—a move that has triggered widespread criticism.
His wife confirmed the arrest, voicing deep concern over his detention and the circumstances surrounding it.
Public Outcry
The incident has sparked backlash on social media and among civil society groups, many of whom view the police’s action as heavy-handed and avoidable. Critics argue that the matter should have been addressed through peaceful dialogue or legal channels, rather than resorting to arrest and detention.
“This is yet another case of overreach,” one commenter posted online. “Sharing a credited post shouldn’t be a criminal offense. If the SEMA boss felt aggrieved, there are lawful avenues to seek redress.”
Human rights advocates have also condemned the arrest, describing it as a violation of Victor’s right to freedom of expression and an intimidation tactic meant to silence dissent or public scrutiny.
Call for Due Process
As of press time, police authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the grounds for Victor’s arrest or the status of any investigation. Legal experts and civil rights defenders are urging the police to either charge him formally or release him immediately, noting that freedom of expression is protected under the Nigerian Constitution.
Efforts to reach the SEMA leadership for comment were unsuccessful.
