Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu says Nigeria’s upper chamber has no power to unilaterally create new states despite receiving 61 proposals from across the country.
Speaking in Ilawe Ekiti over the weekend, Adaramodu explained that state creation can only be considered during a constitutional review, which involves public input and contributions from key stakeholders.
He said the proposals will be reviewed by the constitutional review committee led by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, which will assess demographic, geographic, and historical factors before making any recommendations.
“State creation is a serious matter,” he stressed, noting that even within some of the states requesting division, there is no unanimous agreement.
No new state has been recommended so far, and final decisions will only be made after public hearings when the National Assembly reconvenes.
