The South-South Reawakening Group (SSRG) has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan to resist calls urging him to join the 2027 presidential race, warning that such a move could end his political career.
Dr. Joseph Ambakaderimo, leader of the SSRG, said in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that several Niger Delta groups had reviewed the situation and concluded that those pushing Jonathan back into the political fray were “Nigeria’s enemies.”
According to him, the same people now showing sudden affection for Jonathan were those who once despised him during his presidency. “Go back to history—these are the same people who called him weak and incapable of handling Boko Haram. So, what has suddenly changed now?” he asked.
Ambakaderimo expressed suspicion that the real agenda was to divide the southern votes in 2027 by bringing multiple southern candidates into the contest, while the North consolidates around one strong candidate. “If this is the strategy, a northern candidate could win with just about three million votes, forcing a possible runoff. It’s a backdoor plan to weaken President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and return power to the North,” he warned.
The SSRG stressed that Jonathan himself has not made his intentions clear, urging him to carefully weigh the consequences before making any political move.
This caution comes days after a pro-Jonathan group, Bring Back Our Goodluck, held a rally in Kano calling on him to run, insisting that Nigerians were “misled in 2015” when they voted him out of office.
