Peter Obi Slams FG Over Unpaid Super Eagles Allowances Ahead of World Cup Playoff
Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised the Federal Government for failing to pay the allowances of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Obi expressed deep disappointment over the situation, describing it as a reflection of misplaced national priorities. “It is truly unfortunate that our Super Eagles, who consistently give their best in representing our dear nation, are being owed their allowances,” he wrote.
The former Anambra State governor lamented that Nigeria always seems to find funds for “lavish political spending” but fails to reward those who make the nation proud through service and sacrifice. “We always seem to find money to waste on needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag,” Obi stated, adding that such negligence “is what is found in a now disgraced country.”
Obi further described the situation as shameful, warning that it sends the wrong message to the younger generation — that hard work and national service go unrewarded. He urged authorities to immediately resolve the matter and ensure that athletes are treated with dignity and respect.
Nigeria’s preparation for the World Cup playoff has been disrupted after the Super Eagles and their backroom staff boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, on Tuesday due to unpaid bonuses and allowances. The protest, reports say, stemmed from unresolved financial issues with football administrators just two days before the vital semi-final clash against Gabon at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium.
As fans await resolution, many echo Obi’s sentiments — calling for accountability and a renewed sense of respect for those who represent the nation’s pride on the global stage.
