Fighters of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) reportedly ambushed a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State on Friday night, killing several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and abducting a serving brigade commander leading the troops.
If confirmed, this would mark the first time a Nigerian general has been captured directly from the frontline by an extremist group. While insurgents have previously killed high-ranking officers, abduction of generals remains extremely rare.
Military authorities have yet to release official statements, and casualty figures are still unclear.
