The Ogun State Government has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that involved world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, and claimed the lives of two people.
The incident occurred on Monday around the Makun axis of the expressway while Anthony Joshua and three others were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu. According to preliminary reports, the sport utility vehicle conveying them crashed into a stationary truck along the busy route.
Two male foreign nationals reportedly lost their lives instantly, while Anthony Joshua and the driver were rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.
The Ogun State Government described the accident as painful and deeply unfortunate, especially given the loss of lives. Authorities confirmed that the damaged vehicle has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division office, while arrangements are underway to tow the truck involved for a full investigation.
The state also used the opportunity to caution motorists to be extra careful and obey traffic rules, particularly during the festive season when road traffic is usually heavy. Security agencies and road safety officers have been urged to strengthen monitoring and enforcement across the state to prevent further tragedies.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families. This is a devastating loss, and we pray that God grants them the strength to bear it,” the statement read.
