FCT Police Warn Nigerians on Abortion, Cite Legal and Moral Obligations

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police has reiterated that abortion is a criminal offence under Nigerian law, warning that both parties involved are liable to prosecution. SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, issued the reminder on Tuesday via her official X handle.

Adeh cited Section 232 of the Penal Code and Section 228 of the Criminal Code, which classify abortion as a felony punishable under Nigerian law. She emphasized that both the man and the woman involved in the act commit a criminal offence.

Beyond the legal implications, Adeh referenced moral and religious considerations, quoting Jeremiah 1:5 from the Bible to highlight the sanctity of life before birth. She urged citizens to respect life, uphold ethical values, and be guided by both legal and moral responsibilities to avoid severe consequences.

The police reminder underscores Nigeria’s strict stance on abortion, blending enforcement with advocacy for moral awareness, as authorities continue to call on citizens to act responsibly and lawfully.
