Fear and tension have returned to Idofin community in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State following a deadly attack by suspected terrorists that left one person dead and another seriously injured.
The attack, according to information gathered by SaharaReporters, happened on Saturday evening, January 3, 2026, between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., when armed men reportedly stormed the community and opened fire.
Residents confirmed that the victim who lost his life was a Tiv man, while another indigene of Idofin sustained serious injuries during the assault. A local platform, Egbe Mekun, reported that the injured person was later evacuated by military personnel and taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kogi State Government nor the Nigerian Police had released an official statement on the incident, further deepening residents’ anxiety.
Community members say the latest attack has heightened fear in the area, with many calling on the state government and security agencies to urgently strengthen security presence in Yagba East and surrounding communities to prevent further bloodshed.
The incident comes amid growing insecurity across parts of Kogi State. SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Ayetoro-Kiri community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area was thrown into mourning after three abducted residents died, despite the community raising and paying a ransom through collective efforts.
Although seven abductees were eventually released, three were confirmed dead on arrival, while four others were rushed to the hospital, where they are still battling for their lives. Disturbingly, about 30 other residents are reportedly still in captivity, with their fate unknown.
In a statement signed by the community’s spokesperson, David Ampitan, the people lamented what they described as the government’s failure to take decisive action against the perpetrators. They alleged that instead of focusing on rescue efforts and security, authorities responded by tear-gassing and arresting peaceful protesters who were demanding protection, justice, and the release of their kidnapped relatives.
For residents of Idofin and neighbouring communities, the message is clear: insecurity is worsening, and urgent intervention is needed before more lives are lost.
