US delivers military supplies to Nigeria

The United States has delivered critical military supplies to Nigeria as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security cooperation between both countries.

The delivery was confirmed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which oversees US military operations on the continent. In a post shared on X on Tuesday, AFRICOM said the supplies were handed over to Nigerian partners in Abuja.

According to the statement, the support is aimed at boosting Nigeria’s ongoing security operations and reinforcing the long-standing defence partnership between the two nations. AFRICOM, which tagged the US Mission in Nigeria in the post, did not disclose the specific type or quantity of military equipment delivered.

The development comes amid broader security collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in counterterrorism efforts. On Christmas night, US forces carried out airstrikes in Sokoto State, targeting Islamic State–linked militants allegedly operating alongside the Lakurawa jihadist group and local armed bandit networks.

Those airstrikes followed a diplomatic row triggered by allegations of persecution and violence against Christians in Nigeria. Former US President Donald Trump had described the situation as “genocide,” a claim that was firmly rejected by the Nigerian government.

The latest delivery of military supplies signals continued engagement between both countries despite recent diplomatic tensions, with a shared focus on addressing security threats and regional instability.
