Senegal PM to Visit Morocco Amid AFCON Fan Detentions

Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, is set to visit Morocco on Monday as tensions linger following the detention of at least 18 Senegalese football supporters after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final on January 18.

The fans remain in pre-trial detention in Morocco, charged with hooliganism after disturbances during and after the match, in which Senegal defeated host nation Morocco 1–0 in extra time. Their trial, which began on Thursday in Rabat, was adjourned and is scheduled to resume on January 29.

Sonko’s visit aims to de-escalate diplomatic tensions and coincide with the joint Senegal–Morocco commission meeting scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. The trip will also include a Moroccan–Senegalese economic forum focusing on tourism, energy, infrastructure, and transport, reflecting longstanding cooperation between the two nations.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has expressed regret over the incidents, while Sonko has urged citizens of both countries to remain calm and avoid escalation. Despite these appeals, social media exchanges among fans continue to stoke tension.

The Prime Minister’s visit is expected to focus on resolving the legal situation of the detained Senegalese supporters, with diplomatic negotiations likely to play a key role in determining the outcome of the crisis
