“APC Not Shaken”: Yilwatda Dismisses Peter Obi’s Defection, Expresses Confidence Ahead of 2027

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nantewe Yilwatda, has brushed aside concerns over recent political realignments, insisting that the ruling party remains strong and unbothered.

Speaking in Abuja during the ongoing sale of nomination and expression of interest forms for the 2027 elections, Yilwatda said the APC is not threatened by the reported movement of Peter Obi from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

According to him, the developments within opposition parties have no impact on the APC.

“If someone defects from one opposition party to another, that does not concern us. They should resolve their internal issues,” he said.

Yilwatda also downplayed the defection of about 18 National Assembly members between opposition parties, describing it as insignificant and unlikely to affect the political strength of the ruling party.

In his view, such movements are simply exchanges within the same political space.

“They are fishing from the same pond,” he remarked.

Turning to preparations for the 2027 elections, the APC chairman expressed satisfaction with the turnout of aspirants purchasing nomination forms. He described it as a sign of growing support and confidence in the party across the country.

“Nigerians are happy with what APC is doing. The acceptance is nationwide,” he said.

He also made it clear that the deadline for purchasing and submitting forms would not be extended, citing provisions of the Electoral Act that guide the timeline for party primaries and submission of candidates.

While acknowledging the large crowds at the venue, Yilwatda assured that proper measures would be put in place during the screening process to ensure order and smooth coordination.

For the APC leadership, the message is clear.

Despite ongoing shifts within the opposition, the party believes it remains firmly positioned and focused as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
