“End of an Era”: CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

Ted Turner, the visionary behind the global news network CNN, has died at the age of 87, marking the end of a remarkable era in media and broadcasting.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, by Turner Enterprises, though no official cause was disclosed. The media icon had previously revealed in 2018 that he was living with Lewy body dementia, a degenerative neurological condition.

Turner’s journey to global influence began with a bold leap of ambition. After taking over his father’s struggling billboard business, he expanded into television in the 1970s—a move that would change the media landscape forever.

That vision gave birth to CNN, the world’s first 24 hour news network, redefining how news is delivered and consumed across the globe.

Over the years, Turner built a vast media empire that stretched beyond news into sports, entertainment, and film. His portfolio grew to include the MGM UA studio, and in 1996, he made one of his biggest moves by merging Turner Broadcasting with Time Warner.

Despite his success, his journey was not without challenges. Known for his independent and unconventional style, Turner later struggled within the structure of a large corporate system and eventually lost control of the networks he built.

Beyond business, Turner lived a life that was as dynamic as his career. He was deeply involved in sports, owned professional teams, led competitive sailing ventures, and was widely known for his marriage to actress Jane Fonda.

He was also passionate about philanthropy and environmental causes, dedicating much of his time and resources to initiatives aimed at making a global impact.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in November 1938, Turner’s early life was marked by both privilege and tragedy. He attended military school and later Brown University, though he did not complete his studies. Following his father’s death, he took charge of the family business—a turning point that would shape his future.

From a young entrepreneur to a global media pioneer, Ted Turner’s legacy is one of bold ideas, risk taking, and transformation.

His influence will continue to be felt in the world of journalism and beyond for generations to come.
