Gun, Charm and Cash: Police Bust Interstate Kidnapping Syndicate in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested two suspected members of an interstate kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate allegedly operating across border communities between Enugu and Benue States.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Hassan (28) and Aminu Usman (26), both from Otukpa in Benue State, were arrested on May 14, 2026, in Amutenyi, Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area. The operation was carried out by officers of the Udenu Police Division in collaboration with local Neighbourhood Watch personnel.

According to the police, a Beretta pistol loaded with two rounds of 9mm ammunition was recovered from the suspects, along with three suspected stolen motorcycles, a mobile phone, ATM card, keys, cash, and items believed to be charms.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects are part of a wider criminal network involved in kidnapping and motorcycle theft along communities bordering the two states. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate who remain at large.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the operatives involved in the arrest and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustained operations against violent crime. He also urged residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information to aid crime prevention.

The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
