Nyesom Wike has finally spoken on the deepening political drama in Rivers State, revealing that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had allegedly agreed not to seek a second term as part of a peace deal brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing projects across Abuja on Monday, Wike said the agreement was reached to stop impeachment proceedings against Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
According to the FCT minister, Fubara was expected to completely stay away from the 2027 governorship race, making his decision to obtain nomination forms a betrayal of the understanding reached through Tinubu’s intervention.
“In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form because the agreement was reached that the impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not talk about a second tenure,” Wike said.
He further criticised the governor, saying the move showed a lack of political trust and “gentlemanship,” despite repeated efforts by the president to restore peace in the state.
Wike also threw his full support behind Kingsley Chinda, describing him as the most qualified figure for the job and insisting his emergence was not surprising.
“A good product markets itself. Everybody knows that Kingsley Chinda is the material,” Wike stated, praising Chinda’s experience in both the executive and legislative arms of government.
Beyond politics, Wike expressed excitement over several major infrastructure projects nearing completion in Abuja, including the Renewed Hope City project in Kassara, the Airport Road-Kuje corridor, and the City Gate project being handled by Julius Berger.
He also singled out Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, describing the City Gate project as her vision and praising contractors for delivering quality work ahead of schedule.
