U.S.-Based Lobbying Firm Blasts Tinubu, Urges Focus on Nigeria’s Economic Hardship and Insecurity

A United States-based policy advisory and lobbying firm linked to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Von Batten-Montague-York, has criticised President Bola Tinubu, accusing his administration of prioritising political survival over the welfare of Nigerians.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday night, Dr. Von Batten responded to claims that lobbyists working for the Nigerian government had accused him of “profiting from chaos,” insisting his message was directed personally at the President.

“Your Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, I am glad we have your attention. However, instead of focusing on me, I recommend you focus on the Nigerian people,” he said, listing rising rent, food costs, school fees, and insecurity as major challenges facing citizens.

The lobbyist alleged that Nigerians are currently living under worsening economic hardship and constant fear of kidnapping and violent crime, arguing that governance priorities appear to have shifted toward retaining political power rather than improving lives.

He contrasted the Tinubu administration with what he described as directives from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying his firm was instructed to advocate for free and fair elections in 2027 and draw international attention to insecurity in the country.

He also dismissed the idea that foreign lobbying efforts by the Nigerian government could prevent scrutiny from the United States or other international observers.

“Hiring a white lobbying firm will not shield your government from U.S. scrutiny,” he stated, adding that his organisation would continue pushing for accountability over insecurity and alleged electoral concerns ahead of the 2027 elections.

The statement comes amid rising political tension and increasing international commentary around Nigeria’s economic situation and upcoming electoral cycle. Atiku Abubakar has already declared interest in seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of 2027.
