It took almost a whole week until Katherina Reiche appears in front of the cameras in Berlin. Then she presents one Solution to the price rally at the gas stations and announces that Germany will release part of its strategic oil reserves. Gas station operators should now only be allowed to change prices once a day. So far they have done this an average of 22 times. And apparently they earn very well from it.
Until this Wednesday, Reiche remained silent. She would have to explain a lot to the Germans. Ultimately, the high energy prices as a result of the Iran war threaten to trigger an economic crisis – and as Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, she is responsible for both. It would have to provide answers to pressing questions: How dependent is Germany still on oil and gas, and how does it want to change that? What power do individual corporations have on the oil market, and is that a reason for the high fuel prices?
