Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Oyo State have arrested a former traditional leader (Sarki) and six other suspects in the Ilora area of Afijio Local Government Area over alleged involvement in a kidnapping network.
The incident, which occurred on April 21 around 9:18 p.m. in the Olorunsogo community, reportedly began when a local vigilante member spotted a suspicious man loitering near a residence.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect claimed he was heading to the house of the former Sarki but suddenly attempted to flee, raising suspicion. Although he escaped, he reportedly abandoned a sack containing items believed to be linked to criminal activity, including weapons and other materials.
The discovery prompted immediate alarm, leading residents to alert the Ilora Divisional Police Command.
Acting on the information, police operatives traced the development to the residence of the former Sarki. A joint operation involving the police and the Amotekun Corps led to the arrest of six Fulani men alongside the traditional leader.
Sources said that following preliminary interrogation, three of the suspects were released, while the remaining three—including the former Sarki—were transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further investigation.
The arrests have heightened tension within the community, with residents questioning the circumstances surrounding the release of some suspects and calling for transparency in the investigation.
Reacting to the development, the traditional ruler of Ilora commended residents for their vigilance, noting that their restraint helped prevent the situation from escalating into mob violence. He also confirmed contacting the Divisional Police Officer to ensure due process is followed.
Community members have since appealed to the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola, to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.
As of press time, the spokesperson of the command, Ayanlade Olayinka, had not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
The case remains under investigation, with authorities expected to determine the extent of the suspects’ involvement in the alleged kidnapping activities.
