Opposition Leaders Move to Present Single Candidate for 2027 Presidential Election

Leaders of Nigeria’s major opposition parties have resolved to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, in a bid to strengthen their chances against the ruling party.

The decision was reached at a high-level national summit held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, where key political figures gathered to chart a unified strategy ahead of future elections.

The meeting, chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde, brought together leaders from major opposition platforms including the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

The summit, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” underscored growing efforts to build a cohesive front capable of challenging the current political order.

In a statement shared via the PDP’s official channels, organisers described the gathering as a “strategic response” to Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic and security challenges, emphasising the need for coordinated political action.

Among prominent attendees were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who confirmed his arrival at the summit, and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who expressed optimism about the talks.

Also present were former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party.

Insiders indicated that discussions focused on forming a unified opposition framework, improving inter-party collaboration, and developing a strategic roadmap aimed at mounting a stronger challenge in the 2027 elections.

The move signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, as opposition parties seek to overcome longstanding divisions and present a consolidated alternative to voters.
