Stranded After Payment: Nursing Students Left Without Shelter During Enugu Clinical Posting

Students of the College of Nursing Sciences, St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, have accused the institution’s management of abandoning them in Enugu after allegedly collecting ₦80,000 each for a psychiatric clinical experience programme.

The students said over 100 of them were left stranded at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, with no accommodation provided despite the payment. According to them, many were forced to sleep within the hospital premises, while others struggled to find last-minute lodging at personal cost.

Videos reportedly showed bags and personal belongings scattered around the hospital compound, as some students allegedly slept outdoors for days after arrival.

Sources claimed the situation was worsened by last-minute financial demands, including additional payments for accommodation, textbooks, and other logistics, pushing the total cost for some students close to ₦200,000.

Students also alleged that previous sets benefited from accommodation included in similar fees, raising concerns about inconsistency and poor planning in the current arrangement.

The incident has added to growing complaints from students and staff accusing the institution’s leadership of financial exploitation, intimidation, and poor administrative practices. Some insiders allege that disciplinary and academic processes within the school have also become increasingly punitive.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the institution’s management were unsuccessful, leaving the allegations unaddressed at the time of reporting.

The situation has sparked renewed concerns over student welfare and oversight in clinical training programmes across health institutions in the country.
