Police Invite Activist Israel Joe Over Allegations of Cyberbullying, Missing Person Case

The Nigeria Police Force has summoned human rights activist Israel Joe for interrogation over allegations linked to a missing person case, cyberbullying, and conduct likely to breach public peace.

In an official letter dated April 8, 2026, the Force Intelligence Department (FID) stated that the activist’s name “featured prominently” in an ongoing investigation. The invitation directs Joe to appear before the Deputy Inspector General of Police through the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Gender) at the FID office in Area 11, Garki, Abuja.

The letter, signed by Zainab A. Pembi on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, instructed him to report for questioning on April 10, 2026, at 10 a.m., as part of efforts to advance the investigation.

Activist Links Invitation to Delta Police Dispute

Reacting publicly, Joe alleged that the invitation is connected to his ongoing confrontation with senior police officers over a controversial raid in Delta State. He claimed the police action was an attempt to intimidate him following his criticism of law enforcement operations.

The activist had earlier accused a senior police officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, of orchestrating what he described as a “lawless raid” involving mass arrests, vehicle seizures, and alleged extortion.

Allegations of Raid, Arrests, and Extortion

Joe alleged that the operation, which reportedly lasted two days, led to the arrest of about 270 individuals, alongside the impoundment of several vehicles. He further claimed that a restaurant was raided, with customers arrested, and that officers extorted ₦400,000 from the business owner.

He questioned the legality of the arrests, asking why those detained had not been formally charged in court if they were indeed involved in criminal activities.

Refusal to Retract Statements

Despite receiving a legal threat from the officer’s counsel demanding a retraction, Joe insisted he would not back down. He declared his readiness to face any legal consequences, maintaining that his actions were in defence of the public.

“I will not retract or apologise,” he said, adding that he is prepared for a legal confrontation and expects all parties involved to defend their actions in court.

Escalating Tensions

The situation reflects a growing clash between civil society voices and law enforcement authorities, with broader concerns about accountability, police conduct, and freedom of expression.

Joe also linked the alleged raid to wider claims of misconduct in Delta State, including a recent incident where a young man reportedly died after being chased by police officers.

As the investigation unfolds, the outcome may test the balance between law enforcement authority and the rights of activists to challenge perceived abuses, a dynamic that continues to shape Nigeria’s evolving civic space.
