Justice Crack Released From DSS Custody After Days of Public Outcry

Human rights activist and blogger Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, has regained his freedom after being held by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The development was confirmed by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who announced the release in a post shared on X late Thursday night.

Sowore described the detention as unlawful and praised Nigerians and supporters who spoke out against what he called intimidation and injustice during the period of the activist’s detention.

Justice Crack had been granted bail earlier by a Federal High Court in Abuja in the sum of ₦5 million, alongside strict conditions that included the submission of his international passport and the provision of a senior federal civil servant as surety.

The blogger is currently facing prosecution over alleged cybercrime-related offences connected to a viral video involving the Nigerian Army.

His arrest sparked widespread controversy after relatives and supporters alleged that he was tortured and tied to a tree for several hours following his criticism of the military and comments about the welfare of soldiers.

The Nigerian Army, however, defended its actions, accusing him of attempting to incite discontent within military ranks and engaging in activities it described as capable of undermining discipline and national security.

The case generated strong reactions online, with many Nigerians and civil society groups expressing concern about freedom of expression, accountability within security agencies, and the treatment of activists and whistleblowers in the country.
